I just found out Toyota made a “Mega” Coaster.
Looks like an ordinary “Minibus” coaster, but it has the same engine, transmission and, critically, 4wd system as this
Same 15B-FTE Intercooled 4.1liter 4 cylinder diesel, same portal axles (at least in front) and everything. I think it uses a different, non-portal rear axle instead of fully independent with portal but still. So strange and cool.
I can’t find good images of these axles online but I’ve seen them in person (on a megacruiser) and they look like this
yup, inboard discs too.
NEAT!

This is the perfect Oppo road trip bus.

I was just listening to Love Potion Number 9 by the Coasters. Kismet?

I want this. I would drive it every day.

I am picturing some very fun RV conversions. Single rear wheel conversion, small lift solar panels and go to town on the interior. Oh yes.

So much room for activities!

And the normal Coaster in 1969 was available with a 20R?! Maybe I shouldn’t complain about power to weight ratios.

Exactly! Like EarthRoamer but really obscure.

yup, thats what started me down this path. I know the Coaster used the A442 transmission in the past (thus the “bus” transmission) and so I went looking for other connections and found this. Kinda like knowing there are forklifts out there with a version of the 1fz in it

I rode in one of these in Central America, not too pleasant when it’s packed with people and the occasional chicken.

Now that is pretty awesome. Good find!

Thinking about it, i’d want to see that transfer case. The front propeller shaft would have to spin in a different direction because the portal gearbox input is “backwards”

Meanwhile, Down Under...

If you want factory then “BB58 (factory all-wheel-drive model, automatic only, no low range, dual wheels at the rear, 1993/1999 has the 4 ltr. diesel engine, 1999-2004 has the 4 ltr. Turbo Intercooled diesel engine)“.

I think I could give up the things I love about being an American if it meant being an Australian.
Sidenote, I consider trying out for the Aussie SASR when I left the Marine Corps. But the whole you have to pay your own way/lodging/visa fees for vetting in the UK dissuaded me.

Conversely, if America could be more like Australia then I could consider living in America!
Sidenote: If you really truly wanted something then you’d pay the necessary price for it. That’s why dissuasion exists in the first place. Otherwise, everyone would get what they wanted and we could all be POTUS.

Fair point, but consider all that expense to wind up making what I was quoted in 2012, 50-60k AUD per year? I would have been 30k USD in debt had I gone to the UK for vetting, plus I grew up and realized that I had already slayed my youthful dragons and needed to find a new life after soldiering for a decade.

There is a chance they are used upside down to keep the load height low
